An Encouraging Word

One of the many jobs we have as parents is to train our children how to have discretion in life. One definition of discretion is “careful about what one does.”

All of us desire our children to have discretion in their interactions with other people. The hard part about this kind of child-training is that we usually figure out our children need help with this when they say or do something that shows a lack of discretion. After being embarrassed and upset about some things my children said to others, I finally got a clear message into my busy brain. I needed to purposefully train my children on what to say and not say. As a family, we studied Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. This passage teaches us how to behave and act. We made a list of things our children should say and not say. Here are a couple of ideas we used to train our children. 1) When you see someone has a big pimple, fever blister or mark on his face, do not say anything about it. 2) If someone stutters or has difficulty saying something, don’t make fun of him. 3) When someone tells you something exciting that he has done, don’t try to “one up” him by saying you did something better. Rather, celebrate with him.

When our children learn discretion, they will draw others to them. They will be able to have healthy relationships with others. “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” Proverbs 25:11.

I am praying for you!
