Instrumental music instruction for band begins in the fifth grade. Small group instruction offers the students the opportunity to learn their instrument in a sequential manner. Beginning band students may choose from a variety of woodwind and brass instruments, as well as percussion. 5th and 6th-grade band meet twice a week. Students will start from the basics and will also learn about music theory and history. Band students also benefit from visits by professional clinicians in their instrument family. Elementary Band participates in the Christmas and Spring Concerts.
Plymouth Christian Academy also offers a private string program for younger students, grades K-6th. Lessons are arranged with our string’s teacher, Mrs. Julie McGhee, and take place on our school campus. Mrs. McGhee provides private lessons for violin and cello, as well as teaching the PCA Preparatory Orchestra. This is an entry-level musical program designed to teach children how to play the violin or cello. Many students continue on to high levels of achievement. Students have opportunities to perform as a group in the Elementary Concerts. Lessons are given weekly at PCA during recess or after school hours. Please contact Mrs. Julie McGhee for more information at 734-968-1529. Mrs. McGhee will be able to provide information regarding cost, available lesson time, and rental options.
Middle school and high school students develop their musical skills in comprehensive group instruction. The secondary level band offers students the opportunity and challenge of playing more advanced, demanding musical works. Their studies will have an added emphasis on building finer technique, producing a beautiful tone, expanding range and power, learning scales, and forming a mature musician. Music theory and history are also incorporated into lessons. Music independence is developed by increased sight reading and leadership opportunities. Students are encouraged to participate in the Solo & Ensemble and band festivals offered through MSBOA. The high school band will also get to experience unique educational and engaging trips to perform at various venues throughout the local area and beyond. The PCA Secondary Band plays in the Variety Show, Christmas and Spring Concerts, the PCA Auction, Homecoming, Fine & Performing Arts Showcase, as well as out in the community.
Secondary students have the opportunity to take violin and cello lessons after school with Mrs. Julie McGhee. Students play in at least one PCA concert a year, participate in Solo and Ensembles, and many students join community orchestras. Please contact Mrs. Julie McGhee for more information at 734-968-1529. She will be able to provide information regarding cost, available lesson time, and rental options.
